A Timeline of Music
Music develops as times change, and what genre of music consumed by the public the most has never remained the same. Here are the most popular genres of the last three decades, according to the Billboard Hot 100 charts of the years 1998, 2008, and 2018.
1998
The 90s was the first year that R&B and Hip Hop rose drastically in popularity. Following the 80s, the age of Rock, R&B and Hip Hop suddenly became the most streamed, played, and bought genre of the year, by a landslide.

The most popular song of the year 1998 was ‘Too Close’, from R&B boy group Next.
2008
Dance, Electra, and Alternative became hugely popular in the 00’s, but in terms of the single genre that dominated the year of 2008, Hip Hop takes the cake, once again. The year was a big one for artist like Flo Rida, Lil Wayne, and Rihanna.

The chart topper for the year of 2008 was ‘Low’, by rapper Flo Rida, featuring T-Pain.
2018
The ‘80s were deemed over when Rock was the least streamed genre of 2018. With Hip Hop being the favorite, once again, it is safe to say the ‘90s provided a sturdy bed rock for the genre to continue to flourish for decades to follow.

The highest streaming song of 2018 was ‘Gods Plan’, by Hip Hop artist, Drake.
